Peripheral Neuropathy, Houma

What is Peripheral Neuropathy Pain?

Some 20 million people suffer from peripheral neuropathy each year in the United States. Many of these peripheral neuropathy sufferers are here in Houma as well.

It is formed when damage or disease to the nerves occurs inhibiting proper communication between the brain and the rest of the body. It typically occurs in the extremities, hands, feet and even shoulders.

The peripheral nerves start at the spinal cord and flow throughout the body along lines known as dermatomes. Even if one of these nerves becomes damaged, it can affect other nerves around it which then causes tingling, numbness and even pain in certain areas of the body.

The affects of this damage can contribute to many debilitating problems including difficulty in walking, the sense of touch becomes heightened and pain and other effects can cause the patient many interuptions in their daily life.

What Causes Peripheral Neuropathy?

There are many reasons why peripheral neuropathy develops. Some of the most common reasons are due to poor nutrition, diabetes, infection and even disease.

And frequently, the original cause may not ever be identified making treatment particularly difficult. Around a third of patients with neuropathy fall into this category.

Is there a Solution for Peripheral Neuropathy?

The good news is there is. Depending on the severity of the condition, certain anti-depressants may help, as well as drugs such as Gabapentin, but these mainly treat the symptoms.

“I would like to thank Dr. Dufrene and his staff for the Softwave treatment they performed on both of my feet for Diabetic Neuropathy. From the first session I felt a significant decline in my pain level.

As we progressed though the therapy the sensations changed from session to session whereas some days the pain was completely gone and on other days significantly worse however by the end of the 8th session the pain was at least 85% gone.”
